Illustration Customisation Tool

Designstripe 2020-2022

Challenge

Illustration customisation tools were often rigid, offering only basic edits like colour changes or simple object swaps. Users needed more flexibility to personalise artwork without disrupting the cohesive look of a scene. Additionally, complex editing tools made customisation inaccessible to non-designers.

Goal

Design an intuitive, no-code editor that allows users to deeply customise illustrations while preserving artistic consistency. The tool needed to support element swapping, smart colour adjustments, and dynamic control over style and scene complexity, all through an intuitive interface.

Solution

I designed an interactive editor where users could swap individual elements—characters, objects, and backgrounds—through a popup carousel that previewed seamless alternatives (e.g., clicking a tree opened a selection of 10 other trees that fit the composition).

Smart colour palette generation allowed users to shuffle scene colours or apply new palettes with one click. Two key sliders refined the illustration detail (ranging from minimal line art to fully shaded visuals) and scene complexity (removing or adding elements dynamically).

A live preview system ensured changes felt immediate and organic, and users could export high-resolution files in SVG, PNG, and JPG formats. The final experience empowered users of all skill levels to create unique, professional-quality illustrations effortlessly.

I was co-founder and sole designer, and my role was to design the application, the editor, surrounding pages, and marketing pages, working with a branding agency for the look and design system.
